Steve, thanks for your suggestions. The problem however is not being able to hear the notes, it is me not being able to read a piece of music and then play it on a piano or sing the notes. I have very good relative pitch and can sing pretty much anythign back that is played for me first. So my musical ear is very good even in a large ensamble. If you have any suggestions for reading music I would love to hear them and thanks again for your help.

: Andrew,

: Thanks for sharing your info with us. I am not sure if my input here will help, but it might give you a few ideas.

: You noted above that you feel the main issue for you is auditory figure/ground recognition or discrimination. I interpret this as either 1) you cannot pick out the target melody line in a larger composition with competing instruments or rhythms or 2) you are having trouble fitting in your own production to other movements in a larger composition/melody.

: Three ideas:
: a) Contact a school or program that specializes in working with deaf students. Although you certainly are not deaf, they may have some strategies in music instruction which might be useful to you. Lots of great work in this area is done with children challenged by hearing related issues. See this URL for some more insight or contacts:

: b) You might try pressing in on the outside of your ear (almost like collapsing the ear canal). This tends to make your own singing louder and may allow you to “shut out” other incoming tones and rhythms. Professional singers use this all the time.

: c) You also might try using a simple hearing aid. Some, available from hearing centers, are not that expensive and might serve to help you focus on some sounds while downplaying others.

: I am not sure, from your brief message, what the exact issues are for you, so I tried to cover a few bases. You might also contact an audiologist about your situation. He/She might do some testing and make some better, more specific recommendations which are uniquely related to your individual situation.

: Hope this helps,
: Steve
