: Alice,

Steve: I am happy that (hopefully) you are going to get a full evaluation. One suggestion, however. I would ask up front that the evaluation include both an in depth description of what your STRENGTHS are as well your deficits.

Alice: Thank you for that suggestion. I’m going to write it down and bring it with me, in case I get nervous and forget on the day of the evaluation.

Steve: We all have relative weaknesses as well as strengths (I often tell people that give me a person and enough time/tests, I can find something wrong with ANYBODY!!! ).

Alice: That is very true. A lot of this depends on the things that we most value in our society. If people had to communicate via recitatives and arias, as they do in operas, a person who couldn’t sing would be considered to be highly disabled and communication disordered. If poetry were our prime means of communication, prosaic people would have a defect. So, yes, I definitely agree.

Steve: However, far too many “evaluations” focus on what people cannot do, and say precious little about what they can do. In my opinion, NLD is a disorder of confidence in many ways. If people test you and design a program that deals only with your deficits, it is going to be a long, difficult, frustrating road… (no wonder many kids don’t like to get up in the morning to go to school!). If the examiner also highlights your strengths which should be facilitated, expanded upon, nurtured and strengthened even more, then you have the opportunity to further develop some specific attributes which will help you become a more successful person. The power of positive thinking (= self talk) is VERY important for NLD people, I believe, but it does not get enough attention.

Alice: Yes, that is very true. Plus it will give me insight as to the types of accommodations that I would need in the worksite that would downplay the weaknesses and play up the gifts. That would make me (or anyone else) a valued employee, capable of contributing talents and skills to society. That’s what it’s all about, I think.

: Just a personal opinion and hope it helps,
: Steve

Alice: Thank you very much. It is very helpful.
