Reading the Eye Chart

Our 8 year old daughter Hannah has NLD. When she was four, she had her first eye examination using the letter chart. The nurse set her up in the chair, and asked Hannah to read the middle line on the chart. I watched as Hannah said nothing and became distressed, but I did not know what was wrong. The nurse then moved up the chart, asking Hannah to read the larger print until she was at the top of chart that had very large letters. Still Hannah said nothing, and looked very distressed. Finally, I realized what was happening, and I instructed Hannah to "tell the nurse what the letters are." (She thought she had to "read" a word!) Hannah was relieved, and proceded to tell the nurse what the letters were all the way down the chart.
